Internal door fitters for Gateshead, from just over the river
We supply and fit internal doors in Gateshead from our base in Newcastle. It’s only a short trip over the Tyne.
The borough has a real mix of homes. There are Tyneside flats in Bensham and Saltwell, larger Victorian and Edwardian houses in Low Fell, post-war estates around Felling and Wrekenton, and private estates in Whickham and Ryton. Out west, Chopwell grew up as a mining village with long rows of terraces. Each type has its own fitting quirks, and we plan for them before we turn up.
We fit oak, painted, glazed, fire, bifold and sliding doors, plus the linings, architrave and handles that go with them. If you’d like to know what happens between your first email and the finished job, our how it works page sets it out.

Which doors suit Bensham, Saltwell and Low Fell homes?
The terraced streets around Bensham and Saltwell are full of Tyneside flats. In an upper flat, the stair usually runs straight up from the front door to a landing with the rooms off it. Space at the top is often tight, so the way a door swings matters as much as how it looks.
Upper flats with tight landings
If a door clashes with another door or the top step, we can rehang it to open the other way. Where there’s clear wall beside the opening, a sliding door avoids the swing altogether. For a cupboard or small bathroom, a pocket door that slides into the wall frees up the landing completely, although the wall has to be opened up to take the frame. Our sliding and pocket doors page explains how each type works.
Larger period houses in Low Fell
Low Fell has plenty of bigger Victorian and Edwardian houses with high ceilings, deep skirtings and long hallways. These can carry a heavier, more substantial door. Solid oak or painted four-panel doors look right here, and a glazed door with a traditional pane layout can bring daylight from the front of the house down the hall. We measure every opening first, as doorways in houses of this age are often non-standard. Brass or antique-finish handles on a backplate suit the period, while matt black gives a more current look. Our handles and hardware page shows the finishes.

A lot of the post-war council housing around Felling, Wrekenton and Leam Lane is now privately owned. Many of these houses still have older frames painted many times over, with doors that have already been replaced once or twice.
Frames of this kind are usually sound enough to keep. If a new door won’t close because of paint build-up on the stops, we strip it back. Where old screw holes are worn out, we set the hinges into fresh timber, and we fill or replace damaged architrave. If a frame is soft, split or badly out of line, we’ll tell you and price a new lining as a separate line on the quote, so the choice is yours.
Openings in these houses tend to be standard sizes, which suits ready-made doors. White Shaker and grey painted doors are a popular choice for a clean, modern look on a sensible budget. Have a look at our white and painted doors to see the range.
Getting more light into hallways in Whickham and Ryton
Many houses on the 1960s and 70s estates in Whickham and Ryton have hallways that rely on the glass in the front door for daylight. Swapping solid internal doors for glazed ones is the simplest fix.
- A fully glazed door into the lounge lets light spill through to the hall.
- Obscure glass keeps some privacy on a bathroom or downstairs WC.
- Black-framed industrial-style doors suit an open-plan kitchen.
- The glazed doors we supply use toughened safety glass.
If you’ve knocked the lounge and dining room together, a set of internal bifold doors lets you close the two spaces off again when you want to. Our glazed doors page covers glass types and styles in more detail.
Supply and fit or fit only: which suits your Gateshead job?
Supply and fit is the simplest route. We measure, order the doors and hardware, fit everything and deal with any product problems. One quote covers the lot.
Fit only suits you if you’ve already picked doors, perhaps to match a new kitchen or flooring. Send us the sizes before you buy and we’ll check they suit your openings. A door that’s too small for its frame can’t be stretched, and trimming too much off one can take it beyond the manufacturer’s limits.
Either way, the quote is fixed and itemised. There’s more about how we work on our door supply and fitting page.
Gateshead door questions
Can you fit fire doors in a Gateshead loft conversion?
Yes. If your loft conversion adds a third storey, building control will normally ask for fire doors on the rooms off the stair. We supply certified fire doors and fit them with the hinges, seals and closers the manufacturer specifies.
Can you change the way a door opens?
Yes. Most doors can be rehung to open from the other side, which often helps on small landings. It means moving the hinges and latch keep, and sometimes the stops on the frame.
Will new doors fit my existing frames?
Usually, yes. We measure each frame and order to suit. If a frame is damaged or badly out of square, we’ll recommend a new lining and show it separately on the quote.
How long does a Gateshead job take?
Most houses take one to two days once the doors have been delivered. A single door can often be hung in a few hours.
