Internal door fitting across Newcastle
A well-hung door swings without effort, closes with a soft click and leaves an even gap all the way round. Getting there takes more care than most people expect, because very few frames in older houses are perfectly square. Our internal door fitting service in Newcastle covers single doors, a few rooms or a whole-house refit.
We work across Newcastle, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside, Sunderland and parts of Northumberland and County Durham. Every job is quoted in writing and itemised, so you can see exactly what you're paying for.

Supply and fit or fit only?
Supply and fit
We supply the doors, hinges, latches and handles and fit the lot. This is usually the simplest route, because we measure every opening ourselves and order the right sizes and thicknesses. If something arrives damaged, sorting it out is our job, not yours. You can choose from our oak doors, white and painted doors, glazed and fire doors.
Fit only
If you've already bought your doors, we're happy to hang them. We check them on arrival before any cutting starts, because a trimmed door usually can't be returned. It helps if you've bought the hinges and handles too, though we can supply those.
Before buying doors yourself, measure every opening and check the thickness of the old doors. Standard doors are 35 mm and fire doors 44 mm, and swapping one for the other can mean moving the door stops.
What does fitting an internal door involve?
Hanging a door is a series of small, careful steps. This is what happens on each one.
Trimming to size
Doors are made slightly oversize so they can be cut to fit. We mark the door against the frame and trim the top, bottom and sides to leave a gap of around 2 to 3 mm at the sides and head. The gap at the bottom depends on the flooring, so tell us if new carpet or flooring is on the way. Cut edges are sealed to keep moisture out.
Hinges
Lighter doors hang on two hinges, but heavier doors such as solid oak and all fire doors need three. Each hinge is let into the door and frame so its leaves sit flush, which stops the door binding and keeps the gaps even.
Latches and handles
The latch is set into the edge of the door, the strike plate is let into the frame so the door closes snugly without rattling, and the handles are fitted square. Bathrooms get a privacy lock. Our handles and hardware page goes through the choices.

No guesswork and no surprise extras. This is what happens from your first message to the finished doors.

How long does it take to fit an internal door?
Hanging a single new door with fresh hinge recesses, a latch and handles usually takes two to three hours. Swapping a door onto existing hinge positions can be quicker. Fire doors take longer, because the seals, hinges and any closer all have to be fitted to the manufacturer's instructions.
Most whole-house refits take one to two days once the doors have been delivered. If frames or linings need replacing as well, allow extra time for that. We give you a realistic timescale with the quote so you can plan around it.
Common problems: uneven floors and out-of-square frames
Many houses in Newcastle are a century old or more, and even newer homes settle over time. These are the problems we come across most often.
- Uneven floors. If the floor rises across the doorway, the door catches as it opens. We scribe the bottom edge to follow the floor.
- Out-of-square frames. A leaning frame leaves a tapered gap around a square door, so we trim the door to match. If the frame is badly twisted, we'll suggest replacing it.
- Old hinge positions. New doors rarely line up with the old recesses. We fill them and cut new ones so the hinges sit cleanly.
- New flooring. Thicker floors such as engineered wood or tiles can stop doors opening. Let us know before we trim so we leave the right gap.
Where a frame is beyond saving, new frames and linings give the door a true opening to hang in.
What affects the cost of internal door fitting?
Every house is different, so we quote each job individually. These are the things that make the biggest difference, and our cost guide explains them in more detail.
- The number of doors, since larger jobs work out more efficient per door
- The type of door, as fire doors, heavy oak and glazed doors take longer to hang
- Non-standard sizes, which may need made-to-measure doors or changes to the opening
- The condition of the frames, and whether linings, architrave or skirting need replacing
- The handles, hinges and locks you choose
- Whether the doors need painting or finishing after they're hung
Door fitting questions
Will you take the old doors away?
Yes. Old doors, offcuts and packaging are taken away, and we clean up before we leave.
Do you take on small jobs, like one or two doors?
Yes. We're happy to hang a single door or a couple of rooms' worth, as well as whole-house refits. Small jobs are quoted in the same itemised way.
Do you finish unfinished oak doors?
Unfinished oak needs sealing on all faces and edges soon after it's hung, or it can take on moisture and move. We'll explain the options when we quote, and leave you care advice for whichever finish you choose.
