Internal door fitters covering North Tyneside

North Tyneside is a straightforward run from our base in Newcastle, and we fit internal doors right across it, from the riverside at Wallsend to the seafront at Whitley Bay.

The housing changes a lot over a few miles. Tynemouth and North Shields have tall Victorian terraces, Cullercoats has small cottages close to the bay, and Whitley Bay and Monkseaton are full of Edwardian terraces and interwar semis. Inland, Killingworth was built as a planned town in the 1960s, Longbenton is mostly council-built housing, and Backworth and Shiremoor have large modern estates.

We supply and fit oak, painted, glazed, fire, bifold and sliding doors, or fit doors you’ve sourced yourself. Quotes are fixed and itemised, and we usually reply within one working day.

Tall doors and high ceilings in Tynemouth and North Shields

Many of the Victorian terraces in Tynemouth and North Shields have higher ceilings than a modern house, and some of their doorways are taller or wider than today’s standard sizes. A stock 1981 mm door can look lost in an opening built for something bigger, or simply won’t fill it.

Matching the door to the opening

We measure the height, width and depth of each frame before suggesting anything. If an opening is only slightly off a standard size, a stock door trimmed to fit is usually the most cost-effective answer. Where it’s well outside the usual range, we’ll look at made-to-measure doors or doors that come in taller sizes. Our guide on how to measure an internal door is useful if you want rough sizes for a quote.

Styles that suit the age of the house

Four-panel doors are the natural choice for these houses, in painted finishes or oak. If the hall has an original fanlight over a door, a glazed internal door helps carry that light further into the house. Heavier doors look and feel right in tall openings, so we often suggest solid or solid-core doors here.

Opening up

Doors for opened-up rooms in Whitley Bay and Monkseaton semis

Plenty of the 1920s and 30s semis in Whitley Bay and Monkseaton have had the wall between the front and back rooms taken out, or had the kitchen extended into the garden. That gives a lovely open space, but it can make a house feel colder and noisier than it used to.

A wide opening with a pair of doors keeps the choice open. Glazed double doors let light through even when they’re closed, and they suit the style of these houses well. Where floor space is tight, internal bifold doors fold back against the wall and take up far less room than two swinging doors.

A wider opening often means a new lining and architrave, especially if the original wall has been made wider or a steel beam added. We include this on the quote as a separate item.

Coastal homes

Do homes near the coast need a different kind of internal door?

Not usually a different door, but a little more care in choosing and fitting one. Timber takes on and gives off moisture with the air around it. In houses close to the sea, and in older homes that are less airtight, that movement can be more noticeable from season to season.

  • Engineered oak is more stable than solid oak, so it’s less likely to twist or swell.
  • New doors should sit in the room for a few days before we hang them, so they settle to the conditions.
  • Every face and edge needs sealing, including the top and bottom after trimming, to slow down moisture changes.
  • We leave even, sensible gaps around each door so it won’t stick when the weather turns damp.

Bathrooms in older seafront flats can get very humid. A factory-finished door and a working extractor fan will keep a bathroom door in good shape for much longer. Our oak vs white internal doors guide compares how each finish copes.

Newer housing

Killingworth, Longbenton and the estates at Backworth

Houses from the 1960s onwards in Killingworth and Longbenton, and the newer estates around Backworth, Shiremoor and Northumberland Park, usually have standard-sized, reasonably square openings. That makes them quick to refit and well suited to ready-made doors.

The most common job here is replacing light hollow-core doors with something sturdier and better looking. White Shaker, grey and oak doors are all popular, often with matching black or chrome handles throughout. If the existing linings are sound, they stay, which keeps the cost and the mess down. Look through our full internal doors range to compare styles.

Doors from an integral garage

Many newer houses here have a garage built into the house. The door between the garage and the house needs to be a fire door, normally FD30 and self-closing. If you’re replacing it to match your new doors, it has to keep that rating, so we fit a certified fire door in the same style as the rest.

FAQs

North Tyneside door questions

How far into North Tyneside do you travel?

We cover the whole borough, including Wallsend, Killingworth, North Shields, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and Monkseaton. Put your postcode in the quote form and we’ll confirm.

Can you fit a door to an original Victorian frame?

Yes, as long as the frame is sound. We scribe and trim the new door to follow the frame, and we can repair or replace damaged stops and architrave.

Should oak doors be finished before or after fitting?

Unfinished oak should be sealed soon after it is trimmed and hung, on every face and edge. Pre-finished oak doors only need the trimmed edges sealing, which saves time.

Can you fit fire doors in North Tyneside rental properties?

Yes. We fit certified FD30 fire doors for HMOs, flats and loft conversions, with the seals, hinges and closers the manufacturer specifies.
