Our process

How our door fitting works, from enquiry to finished doors

Our internal door fitting process starts with a fixed, written quote, so there are no surprises on fitting day. Here’s what happens at each stage in Newcastle homes and what we need from you.

  • Survey & measure
  • Itemised quote
  • 1–2 day fit
How it works

The four stages of an internal door job

Every job follows the same order, whether it’s one door or a whole house.

  1. Tell us about the job

Fill in the quote form with the number of doors, the style you like and any sizes you know. Photos sent by email help us a great deal.

  2. Survey and fixed quote

We measure each opening, check the frames and floors, then send a written quote itemising doors, hardware and labour.

  3. Fitting

Once your doors are delivered, we trim and hang them and fit the ironmongery, with dust sheets down throughout.

  4. Checks and sign-off

We test every door with you, take away the waste and old doors, and leave care advice for your finish.

What to include in your enquiry

The more we know at the start, the more accurate your quote will be. You don’t need everything on this list, but it all helps:

  • How many doors you need and which rooms they’re for.
  • The style and finish you have in mind, even if it’s just a link or a photo you like.
  • Rough sizes, if you’ve measured. Our guide on how to measure an internal door shows you where to measure.
  • Photos of the current doors and frames, especially any that stick or don’t latch.
  • Whether any doors need to be fire doors, for example after a loft conversion.
  • Any flooring changes planned, as this affects how much we trim off the bottom.
  • Your postcode, so we can confirm we cover your area.

If you’ve already bought your doors and only need them fitted, tell us the make and size so we can check they suit your openings.

What we check when we survey your doors

The survey is where most problems are spotted early, long before they turn into extra cost on the day.

Sizes and squareness

We measure the width and height of every opening in more than one place. Older houses rarely have perfectly square openings, and a few millimetres can decide whether a standard door will fit or needs more trimming.

Frames and linings

We check that each lining is solid, straight and firmly fixed. If one is twisted, split or loose, we’ll explain the options and price a replacement as a separate line.

Floors and thresholds

We look at the floor finish in each room and on either side of each doorway. This tells us how much clearance each door needs.

Fire door needs

Where a door must be fire-resisting, we confirm the rating required and the parts that go with it, such as intumescent seals and closers. For the rules on stairways and loft conversions, see our guide to fire door regulations for homes.

How your quote is set out

Your quote is fixed and written, and it lists doors, hardware and labour separately. If you’d prefer to buy your own doors, we can quote for fitting only, and we’re happy to show both options side by side so you can compare. The price only changes if you change the order, for example by adding a door or choosing different handles. Our cost guide explains what moves the price up or down.

How long does it take to fit internal doors?

There are two parts to the timing. First is the lead time on the doors themselves, which depends on the range you choose. Stock doors arrive sooner than special finishes or made-to-order sizes. We’ll tell you the expected lead time with your quote.

Once the doors are here, most whole-house refits take one to two days. A single door replacement takes much less. Fire doors take a little longer each, because of the extra seals, hinges and closers that have to be fitted to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Fitting day

What happens on fitting day

We arrive at the agreed time and talk through the plan with you before any old doors come off.

  • Floors and walkways are covered with dust sheets
  • Old doors and hardware are taken off carefully
  • Each new door is trimmed to its opening and hung on its hinges
  • Latches, handles and any locks are fitted and lined up
  • Fire doors get their specified seals and closers
  • Every door is tested for swing, latching and even gaps
  • Waste, packaging and old doors are taken away

Before we leave, we go round each door with you so you can see it open, close and latch properly.

Looking after your new doors

We leave care advice that suits the finish on your doors. Pre-finished doors need little more than a wipe with a damp cloth. Oak finished with oil benefits from a fresh coat every so often, especially on busy doors such as the kitchen. Painted doors can be touched up with the same paint if they get marked.

Timber moves slightly with the seasons, so a door that is snug in a damp winter may ease off in summer. If a door starts to catch or a latch stops lining up, email us with a photo and we’ll advise on the fix.

Questions about the process

Can I change my handles after accepting the quote?

Yes, as long as you tell us before the hardware is ordered. We’ll send a revised quote showing the change, so the price is always clear before any work starts.

Do I need to clear the rooms before you arrive?

There’s no need to empty rooms. Please clear a path to each doorway and leave a little space either side of it. We put dust sheets down and work from there.

What if one of my doors turns out to be damaged on delivery?

We check every door when it arrives and before it is cut. If one is damaged, we won’t fit it. Where you bought the doors through us, we’ll arrange a replacement and agree a time to come back and hang it.

Ready to get started?

Send us a few details and we’ll reply with a clear, itemised quote. There’s no pressure and no obligation.
