Internal door fitters for Northumberland homes
We’re based in Newcastle upon Tyne and drive out to fit internal doors across the southern half of Northumberland. We don’t have a base in the county, so we plan each trip carefully to make the most of the visit.
Northumberland homes vary more than almost anywhere we work. Old stone houses in Hexham, Corbridge and Morpeth sit a short drive from the 1960s and later estates of Cramlington, the large detached houses of Ponteland and the colliery rows of Ashington. Many older properties have thick walls, uneven floors and doorways that were never built to a standard size.
We supply and fit oak, painted, glazed, fire, bifold and sliding doors, and we can source made-to-measure doors when a stock size won’t do.

How far into Northumberland do you travel?
We regularly cover Ponteland, Cramlington, Morpeth, Blyth, Bedlington and Ashington, and along the Tyne Valley to Prudhoe, Corbridge and Hexham. For places further north or west, send us your postcode and the size of the job and we’ll tell you honestly whether we can help.
Because the drive is longer, we try to survey and confirm sizes in one visit, then fit all the doors in a single booking once they’ve been delivered. Clear photos of each doorway, with a tape measure in shot, help us spot awkward openings before we arrive. Our guide on how to measure an internal door shows what to measure.
Fitting internal doors in stone cottages
Stone cottages and farmhouses are some of the most rewarding homes to work on, and some of the trickiest. Here is what we look out for.
Deep reveals and wide linings
Walls in older stone houses can be far thicker than a modern stud wall, so standard door linings are often too narrow. We fit wider linings, or extend existing ones, so the frame fills the full depth of the wall and the architrave sits flat.
Low or narrow openings
Doorways in cottages are often lower and narrower than today’s sizes. A standard door can only be trimmed so far before it’s weakened, so for very small openings we’ll suggest a made-to-measure door instead of cutting a stock one down.
Doors with the right character
Ledged and braced cottage doors, oak plank doors and simple four-panel doors all suit stone houses. Black iron thumb latches or rim locks finish the look. Our oak doors range includes several cottage-style designs.

Many of the older streets in Hexham, Corbridge and Morpeth are within conservation areas, and the county has a great many listed buildings. Being in a conservation area doesn’t usually affect internal doors. A listed building is different: listed building consent can be needed for internal work, including removing original doors, so speak to Northumberland County Council’s conservation team before you commit.
Where the original doors are long gone, we can suggest designs that suit the age of the building, such as plank doors for a farm cottage or four-panel doors for a Georgian or Victorian town house.
If your original doors are worth keeping, we can ease, rehang and refit them with new hardware rather than replacing them.
Oak and double doors for larger homes in Ponteland and Darras Hall
The detached houses around Ponteland and the Darras Hall estate often have wide halls and large living spaces, which suits a more generous door layout. A pair of oak or glazed doors into the main living room makes an entrance, and internal bifold doors can open a kitchen fully onto a family room. Where several matching doors open off one hall, we take care to line up heights, gaps and handle positions so they read as a set. See our bifold doors for wider openings.
Larger houses also tend to have more doors, so hardware choice matters. Choosing one handle range in a single finish, with matching hinges and bathroom locks, keeps the house looking consistent from room to room.
Quieter, sturdier doors for Cramlington and Morpeth estates
Cramlington grew quickly from the 1960s onwards, and Morpeth has seen a lot of newer housing on the edges of the town. Homes on these estates usually have standard, square openings and light hollow-core doors. Replacing them with solid-core doors is a quick job, and the difference in weight and sound is easy to notice. If someone in the house works from home, a solid-core door with a perimeter seal on the study helps keep noise from the rest of the house out.
Updating doors in Ashington, Bedlington and Blyth terraces
Ashington is known for its long colliery rows, and Bedlington and Blyth have plenty of older terraced streets too. These houses are compact, so we often suggest lighter painted doors to keep small rooms bright, with a glazed door into the kitchen. Openings can be out of square after years of settlement, and we scribe each door to its frame. If you’re converting the loft into a third storey, building control will normally ask for fire doors onto the stair.
Northumberland door questions
Do you have an office in Northumberland?
No. We’re based in Newcastle upon Tyne and travel into Northumberland for each job. You can contact us by email or through the quote form.
Can you fit doors on uneven stone floors?
Yes. We scribe the bottom of each door to follow the floor, leaving an even gap so it swings freely without catching.
Can you supply doors in non-standard sizes?
Yes. Where a stock door can’t be trimmed to fit safely, we can source made-to-measure doors in oak or a painted finish.
Do you fit thumb latches and cottage hardware?
Yes. We fit thumb latches, rim locks, T-hinges and other traditional hardware as well as modern lever handles.
