Who fits internal doors in South Tyneside?

We do. We’re a Newcastle-based door fitting team, and we travel through the Tyne Tunnel or along the south bank to fit internal doors across South Tyneside.

The jobs we see here range from rented flats in South Shields to family homes in Hebburn and Jarrow and bungalows in the villages of Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn. We supply and fit oak, painted, glazed, fire, bifold and sliding doors, or fit doors you’ve already bought.

In Jarrow and Hebburn, much of the work is in terraced and semi-detached family homes, where people want doors that look good and stand up to daily life. A solid-core door is a better buy than hollow-core in a busy house. It shrugs off knocks, closes with a reassuring weight and cuts down noise between rooms.

Your quote is fixed, written and broken down into doors, hardware and labour, so nothing changes once we start. If you’re not sure we reach your street, add your postcode to the quote form and we’ll let you know.

Tyneside flats

Internal doors for South Shields flats

South Shields has a large number of Tyneside flats, with an upstairs and a downstairs flat sharing the same terraced building but each with its own front door. Plenty of them are let, so we fit doors for owner-occupiers and landlords alike.

For owners

The upper flats usually have a straight stair up from the front door, which leaves limited space for doors at the top. A sliding or pocket door on a bathroom or box room can make a tight landing feel much less cramped. In the lower flats, a glazed door between the hall and the living room helps light reach further back into the flat.

For landlords

Doors in rented flats take more knocks, so we tend to recommend solid-core doors in a painted finish with simple lever handles on roses. They’re hard-wearing, easy to touch up between tenants and quick to replace like for like. If a flat is licensed as an HMO, or a loft has been converted, fire doors may be needed, and we’ll work to the fire risk assessment or building control’s requirements. Our landlord and commercial doors page covers this in more detail.

Period houses

Keeping the character of older homes in Westoe and Harton

Around Westoe and parts of Harton you’ll find larger Victorian and Edwardian houses with tall ceilings, deep skirtings and decorative mouldings. Doors in these houses should look as though they belong.

  • Four-panel doors with raised and fielded or moulded panels suit the period best.
  • Painted doors can be colour-matched to woodwork, or finished in a soft off-white.
  • Original architrave is worth keeping where it’s in good order. We fit the new door to the existing frame and leave the trim in place.
  • Traditional brass or antique-finish handles on backplates finish the look.

Westoe Village is a conservation area. Changing internal doors in a house there doesn’t normally need permission, but if the house is listed, internal work can, so check with South Tyneside Council first. See our door styles guide for period options.

Easier access

Wider doorways and easier handles for bungalows in Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn

The villages south of South Shields have their share of bungalows and single-storey homes, and many owners want them to stay easy to live in for years to come. Doors, and the way they are fitted, make a big difference to that.

Widening an opening to take an 838 mm door, or a 926 mm metric door where the wall allows, gives more room for a walking frame or wheelchair. Lever handles are easier on stiff hands than round knobs. Sliding doors remove the need to step back while a door swings, and lifting a raised threshold strip between rooms takes away a trip hazard. Widening an opening means a new lining and sometimes a new lintel, so we’ll look at it on site before quoting. If you’re adapting a home for an older relative or after a spell in hospital, an occupational therapist can advise on the widths and fittings that will help most. You can see suitable options on our sliding and pocket doors page.
